Led by Fannie Mae, in partnership with the National Urban League, Future Housing Leaders is an effort to increase diversity in all sectors of the housing industry.

The program aims to match exceptional students with industry internships. When you accept an internship with a Future Housing Leaders employer partner, you’ll receive enhanced support and guidance for a successful internship and beyond. Employers make interview and hiring decisions based on the principles of equal employment and their own selection criteria.

Through Future Housing Leaders, students get an inside look at a dynamic industry essential to our economy and gain invaluable work experience for a better resume.

Internships vary by employer and span various career areas and disciplines including business, information technology, finance, policy, accounting, audit, risk management, operations, human resources, engineering, communications, marketing, and graphic design. The internship experience will provide you with practical work experience and personal development opportunities.

Employers are searching for a broad range of students, across various majors and concentrations. The next generation of leaders in the housing industry should exhibit these qualities:

In addition to the training your employer provides, as a Future Housing Leaders intern you will have access to online tools, resources, and on-demand training to help develop your professional and career skills. You will have the opportunity to participate in Future Housing Leaders online meetups, workshops, social media groups, and more.

In addition to the skills and knowledge you gain from your employer, as a Future Housing Leaders intern, you will deepen your knowledge in three areas—the housing industry, professional success, and personal success.

By joining the Future Housing Leaders program, you will gain access to a large network of housing industry Employer Partners. If you successfully complete your internship you may be offered employment by your internship employer—or another employer within the Future Housing Leaders network after you graduate. Additionally, as a graduating Future Housing Leader, you’ll continue to have online access to tools and resources, job postings, and career guidance.

Employers will offer internships for one summer. While you are employed for the summer, your employer may choose to offer you an opportunity to return for a second summer. Or, you will have the opportunity to apply for an internship with one of the other Future Housing Leaders participating employers for the following summer.
